A big box gets a large makeover.

With over 1,400 stores in 48 states, including 13 in Connecticut, Big Lots, Inc. is an ever expanding company that sells a variety of overstocked items that can be found in the store one day and sold out the next. Often when opening a new store, they take over a formerly occupied building, typically in a “big box” type environment. So was the case in this East Haven location where they moved into a recently shuttered and vacated Xpect Discounts.

Milestone was brought on by the building’s owner CA White and worked alongside Big Lots’ in-house design team to renovate the space. Improvements included new restrooms, back of house offices and utility upgrades. A new ramp/loading dock was also built to accommodate truck shipments – due to the building’s proximity to abutting wetlands, strict regulations required moving existing doorways to be able to accommodate it. The interior ceiling was painted white and left exposed which required the installation of all electrical and hvac systems in an organized manner.

Major demo work was performed during off-hours so as not to disrupt the adjacent businesses and an electrical shut down for the utility upgrade portion of the project took place on a Sunday so as not to affect the surrounding stores that shared the common grid.
