Safety Officer

Responsible for promoting and enforcing safety protocols and regulations to ensure a secure working environment for all personnel on construction sites. Work closely with project teams to identify hazards, implement safety measures, provide training, and monitor compliance with safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Inspections and Audits
    • Conduct regular inspections of construction sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
    • Perform site audits to assess the effectiveness of safety measures and identify areas for improvement.
    • Document findings from inspections and audits and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Safety Training and Education
    • Develop and deliver safety training programs for construction personnel, including new hires, subcontractors, and visitors.
    • Provide instruction on the proper use of safety equipment, tools and machinery, as well as documentation and emergency procedures.
    • Conduct toolbox talks, safety committee meetings and workshops to reinforce safety practices and promote awareness.
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
    • Identify and evaluate potential safety hazards associated with construction activities, equipment, and materials.
    • Conduct risk assessments to determine the likelihood and severity of potential incidents and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
    • Work with project teams to implement controls and safety measures to minimize hazards and prevent accidents.
  • Safety Compliance and Documentation
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, codes and standards applicable to construction activities.
    • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions and safety equipment inspections.
    • Prepare and submit reports on safety performance, trends and compliance to project management and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Incident Investigation and Reporting
    • Investigate accidents, near misses and safety incidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
    • Document and report findings from investigations, including recommended corrective actions and lessons learned.
    • Collaborate with management and legal teams to respond to regulatory inquiries or investigations related to safety incidents.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
    • Develop and implement emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fire, medical emergencies and natural disasters.
    • Conduct drills and exercises to test emergency procedures and ensure readiness among construction personnel.
    • Coordinate with emergency services and other stakeholders to respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Safety Communication and Collaboration
    • Communicate safety policies, procedures, and expectations to all personnel on construction sites.
    • Work with Project Managers and Superintendents to prepare and publish Job Hazard Analysis Reports, conduct weekly Tailgate Safety Meetings, prepare and publish Daily Equipment Inspection Reports, Accident/Near Miss Reports and Site-Specific Safety Policies.
    • Collaborate with project teams, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies to address safety-related issues and implement improvements.
    • Serve as a resource for safety-related inquiries and provide guidance on compliance with safety regulations and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering or related field (preferred).
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g. OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety) is desirable.
  • Proven experience (2+ years) in construction safety or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations, standards and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment and collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and software relevant to safety management and documentation.
