Safety Officer
Responsible for promoting and enforcing safety protocols and regulations to ensure a secure working environment for all personnel on construction sites. Work closely with project teams to identify hazards, implement safety measures, provide training, and monitor compliance with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Inspections and Audits
- Conduct regular inspections of construction sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Perform site audits to assess the effectiveness of safety measures and identify areas for improvement.
- Document findings from inspections and audits and recommend corrective actions as needed.
- Safety Training and Education
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for construction personnel, including new hires, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Provide instruction on the proper use of safety equipment, tools and machinery, as well as documentation and emergency procedures.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety committee meetings and workshops to reinforce safety practices and promote awareness.
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Identify and evaluate potential safety hazards associated with construction activities, equipment, and materials.
- Conduct risk assessments to determine the likelihood and severity of potential incidents and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
- Work with project teams to implement controls and safety measures to minimize hazards and prevent accidents.
- Safety Compliance and Documentation
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, codes and standards applicable to construction activities.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions and safety equipment inspections.
- Prepare and submit reports on safety performance, trends and compliance to project management and regulatory agencies as required.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Investigate accidents, near misses and safety incidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
- Document and report findings from investigations, including recommended corrective actions and lessons learned.
- Collaborate with management and legal teams to respond to regulatory inquiries or investigations related to safety incidents.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fire, medical emergencies and natural disasters.
- Conduct drills and exercises to test emergency procedures and ensure readiness among construction personnel.
- Coordinate with emergency services and other stakeholders to respond effectively to emergency situations.
- Safety Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate safety policies, procedures, and expectations to all personnel on construction sites.
- Work with Project Managers and Superintendents to prepare and publish Job Hazard Analysis Reports, conduct weekly Tailgate Safety Meetings, prepare and publish Daily Equipment Inspection Reports, Accident/Near Miss Reports and Site-Specific Safety Policies.
- Collaborate with project teams, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies to address safety-related issues and implement improvements.
- Serve as a resource for safety-related inquiries and provide guidance on compliance with safety regulations and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering or related field (preferred).
- Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g. OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety) is desirable.
- Proven experience (2+ years) in construction safety or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations, standards and best practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced construction environment and collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in computer applications and software relevant to safety management and documentation.
